Colorfly CDA-M1P DAC Review (2) – Bringing The Bass

The Colorfly CDA-M1P is well-built and well-featured, with a very powerful balanced out, but a bit too large and heavy for true portability. V-shaped and very full-sounding, with a thick, billowy low end which tends to boominess and lacks speed, esp. on more efficient IEMs. Tonality is rich, warm and free from sharpness or digital artifacts, but a bit syrupy—cymbals and snares sound smoothed over and lacking in snap, while high-end detail can be overshadowed by the big throbbing bass.

The CDA-M1P does pair well with less sensitive phone like the Senn HD650, which showed more drive and bass control, and soundstage is expansive. However, comparably priced pieces like the Truthear Shio are truer-to-source, while the Hidisz S3 had better-controlled bass, albeit with less oomph and driving power.

If nothing else, the CDA-M1P is not colorless—it has a bold, dynamic personality which will enliven your headphones, sometimes for the better. That omnipresent, throbbing bottom can get intrusive and keeps me from recommending the CDA-M1P unqualifiedly.
