Moondrop Golden Ages Review (2nd Opinion): I Cover the Waterfront…

Moondrop’s unfortunate fate was to hit an early homer with the cheap Space Travel (Jürgen’s review here), which devalued their subsequent, pricier TWS models, none of which were much different or better.

However, perhaps due to its deployment of planars the Golden Ages sounds quite different than its predecessors, although it retains those weird, wonderful voice prompts. I don’t hear these differently than Durwood (review here)—mild bass, forward, energetic mids with a sharp, well-extended treble and a very wide soundstage.

However,  I come to a more positive conclusion–I rate the Golden Ages a small but discernable step-up from the smoother, more subdued Space Travel, with more overall resolution and  better dynamic contrasts. Also a lot louder.  To Durwood’s point, I could see these turning off the treble-averse and/or getting exhausting over long sessions, but I like the crisp, vivid presentation.

For the $79 tab, you can certainly find TWS that rock harder, or sport a more natural timbre, but the Golden Ages present as much detail and image as well as you’ll get at this level and I have no reservations about giving these a thumbs-up.
